“The Unifier”

The death penalty is ultimately not about killing human beings. It is about creating a belief that society only executes monsters and predators. In America, politicians claim to promote a ‘culture of life’, why the death penalty is only reserved for those who fall out of the human race. The offenders must be dehumanized by society, otherwise they cannot be killed. In order to eliminate something, Bertolt Brecht said, it must be called ‘savage’. The Native Americans were called that. So are the offenders on death row. If this fragile illusion ever fall apart among its supporters, we will then know, that within the being of the American death penalty rests a deep distaste for its own purpose and existence.
